Felix Brand

Felix is an Associate at Lion’s Head. He focuses on renewable energy, infrastructure, and fund structuring. His work involves both project finance and corporate transactions.

Felix joined having completed his MSc with Distinction in Carbon Finance at the University of Edinburgh Business School, focusing his thesis work on off-grid solar energy financing structures in East Africa.

Felix has also worked in renewables at developers and manufacturers based in Switzerland and Denmark, where he focused on energy policy and its effect on both domestic solar as well as utility-scale wind power.

Felix also holds an MA with Honours from the University of Edinburgh in International Relations.

Clemens is a founding partner of Lion’s Head, and currently runs the Nairobi office which he set up in 2013. 

He focuses his time on overseeing Lion’s Head Asset Management operations and is responsible for Risk Oversight as well as the firm’s overall strategic development. Over the past 10 years Clemens has been involved in advisory activities across a number of sectors, including financial services, renewable energy and agriculture.

Prior to setting up Lion’s Head, Clemens spend 13 years in investment banking, first at Morgan Stanley and then at Goldman Sachs. He worked in London, Singapore and New York and was responsible for executing a number of large structured and commodity backed financings.
 
Clemens holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and a Masters in Business Administration from INSEAD, Fontainebleau.

Gaia is a Director at Lion’s Head specializing in Climate and WASH finance.

She has advised both private and public sector clients on various projects across the climate finance spectrum, from Green Bonds to Carbon Tax Policy, and brings expertise in innovative financing structures to development projects.

Gaia joined Lion’s Head from Vivid Economics where she focused on climate finance and policy, advising a range of clients, from large industry corporates to DFIs and governments, on the economic impact of policy, climate risk and the structuring of funds. Prior to this she worked at Goldman Sachs as a Credit Risk Analyst.

Gaia has a Masters (First Class Hons) in Physics with Theoretical Physics from Imperial College London and a Graduate Diploma (Merit) in Economics from the London School of Economics.

James Doree

James Doree is a Managing Director at Lion’s Head and has primary responsibility for the managing the African Local Currency Bond Fund (www.alcbfund.com).

Through this and other initiatives, he originates and executes transactions in financial services, housing, renewable energy, infrastructure and agriculture. Since 2015, the ALCB Fund has raised $175 million in committed capital and has made investments in more than 15 African countries.

In addition to his work in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, James has advised European utilities, governments and regulators on corporate and regulatory finance issues, covering energy, rail and postal sectors. James was previously a Senior Consultant at Cambridge Economic Policy Associates and, prior to that, worked for Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Nairobi. He has a Masters in Development Economics and a first class MA in History and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford.

Marilia dos Reis

Marília is an Associate at Lion’s Head, focusing on sovereign debt advisory and innovative finance for global health and education.

Prior to joining Lion’s Head, Marília worked with fundraising and business development at Simprints, a nonprofit tech start-up providing low-cost biometric systems for improved service delivery in developing countries. Before moving to the UK, she co-founded a social enterprise in Brazil, Colibrii, that focuses on women’s empowerment.

Other work experience includes management consulting at Deloitte, monitoring and evaluation at a Brazilian State Government, and Corporate Social Responsibility at Tata in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Marília is an Economist with an MPhil in International Development from the University of Cambridge. Alongside Lion’s Head, she is currently a PhD candidate at the London School of Economics and Political Science, focusing her research on innovative financing in the context of international development.

Olamide Edun

Olamide joined Lion’s Head in 2017 and is a member of the African Local Currency Bond Fund team, focussed on transaction origination and execution in West Africa.

Before joining Lion’s Head, Olamide worked in the investment team at Synergy Capital, a private equity fund providing growth capital to SME companies operating in Nigeria and Ghana. Olamide’s experience in Nigeria also includes consulting projects for State Governments and Government sponsored institutions.

Prior to this, he worked at Moelis & Company, advising UK and European funds and corporates on debt restructuring and recapitalisation transactions.

Olamide is based in Lagos, Nigeria, is a CFA charterholder and holds a BA in Classics from Balliol College, Oxford.

Christopher Egerton-Warburton

Christopher (Edge) is an expert in the structuring and execution of innovative financing solutions.

Prior to establishing LHGP, Edge spent 14 years at Goldman Sachs within the Debt Capital Markets group. In his last role he was Head of the Sovereign, Supranational and Agency team. He spent six years within the EEMEA emerging markets team, where he worked primarily in Greece, Hungary, Israel, Turkey and South Africa.

In 2002 Edge joined the European Sovereign Financing team, which he headed from 2006, providing vanilla and innovative financing solutions to Goldman Sachs’ leading franchise in this sector. During this time he worked on transactions in Belgium, Germany, and the UK.

He was the lead banker on a new multilateral development institution – The International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm), on behalf of the governments of France, Italy, Norway, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and the UK.

Edge received an MA in Biochemistry from Christ Church College at Oxford University.

Patrick German

Patrick joined Lion’s Head in 2017 and is responsible for the distribution of in-house strategies.

He has worked extensively on both the Buy and Sell sides of the investment industry. He joined LGT Management in 1988 as an Equity Portfolio Manager investing in Asian stock markets, based in Hong Kong for eight years.

He then joined UBS as Head of Asian Equity Sales for UK and Europe, based in London. Patrick then co-founded RWC Partners, an absolute return asset management business, in London where he was responsible for the Marketing, building AUM to over US$3bn.

After eleven years, the three co-founders sold their share in RWC to Schroders Investment Management to pursue independent projects. Patrick returned to Emerging Markets focusing on Africa, working firstly on a private investment project in Zimbabwe before joining Imara Asset Management to market their African equity strategies.

Victoria Goodfellow

Victoria joined as an Executive Director at Lion’s Head in 2018, bringing extensive experience in the design and execution of financing solutions in emerging markets, with a focus on the sustainable development of low income countries.

Prior to working with LHGP, Victoria was a Senior Technical Advisor for Health Insurance at the Clinton Health Access Initiative, where she was responsible for overseeing CHAI’s support to the Ethiopian Health Insurance Agency, introducing major reforms to the health financing landscape in Ethiopia.

Prior to that, she served as Health Economist within the UK government focusing on the financing of the hospital sector within the NHS, and in academia at LSE Health, where she co-authored a major WHO-published report into diagnostics for infectious disease.

Before specialising in the health sector, Victoria spent a decade in investment banking at Barclays, Citigroup and UBS, in senior positions providing advisory and execution services to institutional investors in emerging and frontier equity markets, with particular expertise in South Africa, Russia, and the Middle East.

Victoria holds an MSc in Health Policy from the LSE, and a BEconSc in Economics from the University of Manchester.

Makhtar Gueye

Makhtar joined Lion’s Head in 2017 and focuses primarily on francophone Africa, including supporting the African Local Currency Bond Fund.

He also offers expertise in advisory areas concerning especially to financial and capital markets, or economics related. Prior to joining Lion’s Head, Makhtar was a Financial Analyst at UMOA-Titres, the West African regional agency, in the issuance and management of sovereign bonds in the West African Monetary Union.

He has also worked as an Assistant Economist at the African Development Bank. Makhtar holds a Bachelor in Economics and Management and a Masters in Economics and Financial Engineering from the University of Rennes 1.

Omar Gueye

Mr. Omar Gueye joined Lion’s Head in 2018. Based in Nairobi, he originates and executes transactions on behalf of the funds managed by LHGP Asset Management.

Omar has over 10 years of banking and asset management experience. His areas of expertise include private equity, private debt and risk management. Prior to Lion’s Head, he was a Senior Investment Officer at responsAbility Investments AG, a Zurich based asset manager focusing on Emerging and Frontier Markets.

He also worked as an Investment Associate at Impaxis Capital, and as a Summer Associate at the European Investment Bank within the directorate for financing operations outside the European Union.

Omar holds a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Economics from Paris-Sorbonne University, and an MSc in Finance from the London School of Economics.

Harry joined Lion’s Head in 2012. He provides investment expertise and strategic advice looking to develop innovative financing strategies, with a focus on renewable energy and financial inclusion.

Harry is the lead investment manager for the Off-Grid Energy Access Fund (OGEF), which is deploying local currency debt to support household energy access companies across Africa.

Harry was an International Fellow at Columbia University in New York where he completed a Masters degree focused on international energy finance and policy.

Through that programme, Harry advised UNEP on clean energy access and enterprise development in Haiti and a range of energy access, and financial inclusion impact investors.

Previously, Harry worked in microfinance investment with Developing World Markets and spent two years structuring municipal sustainable energy projects in the Clinton Climate Initiative’s London team Harry has a BA in Linguistics from Yale University.

Brock Hoback

Brock joined Lion’s Head in 2015 and works primarily in African capital markets on behalf of the African Local Currency Bond Fund (www.alcbfund.com).

He provides expertise in financial institution assessment and regulation, microfinance and project finance. Before joining Lion’s Head, Brock was a consultant working closely with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and its national partners in Nigeria to strengthen the country’s microfinance and microinsurance sectors.

He has also worked for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and MEDA.

Brock has an MSc (Distinction) in Risk and Finance from the London School of Economics and Honours Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Ottawa.

Dan Hughes

Dan joined Lion’s Head as an Executive Director in 2017. He provides strategic advice and technical expertise to a range of clients, with a focus on emerging markets and the Middle East.

Prior to joining Lion’s Head, Dan spent over 20 years with the British Army, working predominantly as a senior strategist and policy advisor in the UK Ministry of Defence, advising Ministers and senior leadership and on the appropriate military support to UK’s Foreign Policy objectives.

Having served operational tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Dan used his experience of the Middle East to plan the response of UK Special Forces to 9/11, the deployment of UK military effort in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of UK forces from Iraq. In his last role he was the Assistant Head of Strategy for the UK Ministry of Defence, responsible for implementing a framework for the delivery of the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review. Dan is a graduate of the UK Joint Command and Staff Course and has an MA in International Relations and Affairs from King’s College, London.

Chris Kandie

Chris is a director at Lion’s Head based in Nairobi. He provides expertise in transaction advisory and structuring with a focus on public sector and infrastructure finance.

Chris has a wealth of experience from working in the financial consulting and banking sectors in East Africa. He joined LHGP from Ernst & Young’s Transaction Advisory Services team in Kenya providing infrastructure finance, PPP, M&A and transaction support services.

Chris holds a BSc. Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi and is currently pursuing his MBA from the Edinburgh Business School.

Alex joined Lion's Head in 2018 as Director and is based in Nairobi, Kenya. He provides expertise in renewable energy, and is primarily focused on portfolio analysis for the Off-Grid Energy Access Fund (www.ogefafrica.com ).

Prior to joining Lion's Head, Alex was a senior supply chain manager at M-KOPA Solar, where he focused on demand and supply strategic planning for the Pay-As-You-Go premier company.

Before that, he was a petroleum engineer at Weatherford, based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He also worked for KPMG as a risk associate.

Alex holds a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi, and is currently pursuing an MBA from Edinburgh Business School.

Winnie Karanja

Winnie is a director at Lion’s Head, managing the ALCB fund Technical Assistance Facility. Her core expertise is in impact investment and innovative financing transaction facilitation, and corporate finance transaction structuring.

Prior to joining Lion’s Head, Winnie worked as a financial analyst at Dalberg Capital (D.Capital Partners), an impact investing advisory firm that facilitates investments that catalyse economic and social change. At Dalberg Capital (D.Capital Partners), she was involved in facilitating investments and structuring innovative financing solutions in various sectors including agriculture, health care and education.

She also has previous work experience as a corporate finance analyst with I&M Burbidge Capital, a corporate finance advisory firm based in East Africa that specializes in advising businesses in the region on capital raising transactions.

Winnie holds a Bachelor of commerce degree in Finance from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and is a Certified Investments and Financial Analyst (CIFA – K).

Alex is an Executive Director at Lion’s Head specialising in infrastructure and corporate finance across frontier capital markets.

Alex has advised on the execution of M&A deals in East Africa and structured infrastructure funds for multilaterals as well as African Governments. He is particularly focused on French speaking countries and has closed several corporate investments in the XOF monetary zone.

His clients include developed and emerging market governments, multilaterals, corporates and foundations. He has worked with the World Bank Group, African Development Bank, FSD Africa, Rift Valley Holdings, Private Infrastructure Development Group, Africa50, DfID, UK Foreign Office, KfW, DBSA, AgDevCo and TMEA.

Before joining Lion’s Head, Alex worked in infrastructure finance at Société Générale Corporate and Investment Bank and as a consultant for TechnoServe as well as LGT Venture Philantropy.


Alex holds an MSc in Management from HEC Paris as well as an MA in Public Management from Sciences Po Paris.

Leonard Mathu

Leonard has valuable experience in sourcing, structuring and financing of transactions across Sub-Saharan Africa.

He was previously Investment Manager and Executive Assistant to the Chairman of an investment company in Kenya where he was involved in various projects including; power projects in Tanzania and Nigeria, agribusiness across multiple countries in Sub Saharan Africa, oil & gas services in Nigeria, telecoms in Nigeria, real estate and financial services in Kenya.

In 2007, Leonard joined Cable & Wireless in the Cayman Islands. Prior to that, he was an associate with a boutique Venture Capital firm in Minneapolis where he was involved in the commercialization of a renewable energy project as well as building a business plan for a medical device and diagnostic start-up.

Leonard graduated from United States International University, Nairobi with a BSc. in International Business and holds an MBA from Carlson School of Management in Minnesota, USA. He is a Certified Public Accountant.

Prior to joining Lion’s Head, Mary was an external auditor at KPMG Kenya where she carried out financial statement audits and assurance engagements across a variety of clients within different industries.

Mary holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Cape Town and a BSc degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi. She is also holds an accounting qualification.

Leon joined Lion’s Head as an Analyst in 2015. He focuses on capital markets, and financing for utilities and infrastructure.

Prior to Lion’s Head, Leon was an economist at the Institute of Economic Affairs-Kenya, where he carried out research on international trade issues like the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the EAC-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, and the Tri-Partite Free Trade Agreement.

Leon has also previously worked at a Swiss NGO focusing on trade, and at a Pan-African online news company based in Washington, DC.

Leon holds a BA degree in Economics and International Relations from Colgate University.

Ighosime Oyofo

Ighosime joined Lion’s Head in 2018 as a Director. He is based in the Lagos office, where he is focused on helping to grow the West Africa advisory business.

He has worked predominantly in Africa across several sectors, including financial services, telecommunications, agriculture, consumer goods, industrials and education. Prior to joining Lion’s Head, Ighosime worked on capital raising, strategy, and investor relations at African Leadership University (Mauritius), a disruptive educational start-up.

Before this, he was in the advisory business of Chapel Hill Denham, a leading Nigerian investment bank, where he advised large Nigerian corporates, state governments, and international investors across capital markets and M&A. He has led projects in Anglophone and Francophone West Africa and has been commended by the Nigerian SEC for his contributions to capital markets development in the country.

Ighosime holds a Bachelors in Business Administration from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Likki is an Associate at Lion’s Head focusing on finance for energy, sustainability and health.

Before joining Lion’s Head, she worked on energy tariff reform and results-based finance with the World Bank Energy and Extractives GP in Jakarta and on project finance with IFC Advisory in Washington DC. Prior to this, she advised on private sector engagement for business-driven, ICT-based solutions in health and sustainability with the German Development Agency GIZ (Unit for Private Sector Cooperation) in Berlin.

Before dedicating herself to finance in a developing market context, Likki monitored OEM market developments in South and South-East Asia with Bosch Japan and worked in trade support at the German Trade Office Taipei. Likki studied Economics, Business and China Studies at Hamburg University and further specialized in environmental and economic policies for sustainable development in Asia at Lund University.

Jasper joined Lion’s Head in 2018 after having worked in public sector management consultancy in the Nordics, central Europe and the Middle East as well as in international development consultancy focusing on impact investment and climate finance.

Prior to this, he gained experience in managing bilateral aid programmes focussing on market system development and job creation in Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

Jasper holds a MPhil in International Development from the University of Cambridge as well as an MSc and BSc in International Business and Politics from Copenhagen Business School.

Geoffrey Wahome

Geoffrey joined Lion’s Head in 2016. He provides back-office support to and conducts portfolio analysis for the African Local Currency Bond Fund (www.alcbfund.com). He also offers expertise in other advisory-related areas especially within the financial inclusion space.

Prior to joining Lion’s Head, Geoffrey worked at Old Mutual Securities, an affiliate company of UAP Old Mutual Group, as a Regional Equities Trader covering East Africa, having transitioned from a previous role as an investment analyst. He also worked with the wider Group (Old Mutual Kenya) in the financial management and reporting unit.

Geoffrey graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelors of Commerce degree (Finance specialization) and is currently pursuing his MBA studies at the United States International University – Africa. He is also a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya.

Nick Zanette

Nick joined Lion's Head as an Associate in April 2018. At Lion’s Head Nick is focused on Lusophone Africa and primarily supports Advisory work in Energy & Power.

Prior to this, he spent time working at Edgebold Capital, a private investment group based in London, with a focus on Southern Africa where he worked on a number of investments in the mining, transport & logistics and real estate sectors.

Nick worked to develop a group wide strategy building a vertically integrated value chain across the group's portfolio companies, including the development of a trade finance strategy suited to the local economies and entry into the physical trading of certain key commodities. Other work included advising a number of client's on various stages of their investments into the region.

 
 
 

BIM HUNDAL (1959-2017)

 Bim Hundal passed away peacefully after fighting a brain-tumour for 5 months.

Bim was Lion’s Head’s chairman, founder and instrumental in guiding the Firm to where it is today. Bim was a friend and mentor to all of us at Lion’s Head. We will miss him sorely, but his legacy will continue. Lion’s Head has grown into a successful business that will flourish thanks to the foundation that Bim helped lay.

While his passing away remains a very sad day for all of us, the Partners of Lion’s Head and the entire team are energized by the desire to implement Bim’s vision for Lion’s Head.
